Welcome to On Demand Media.
Although it may not look like it, this is a blog about television--about what will happen to it with the arrival of video-on-demand (VOD). Is the future about
- The web?
- New uses of the internet?
- New forms of delivery?
- New user experiences?
- An infinity of small publishers?
- A new user experience?
- Do all of these need to happen at once?
This is a difficult subject. We just don't know what will happen. With counless new developments, comments and trends emerging all the time, it is easy to get confused and loose track. Among other things, a fruitful discussion should take account of:
- New media and the web as expressive forms
- Broadcasting as an expressive form
- Industry trends -- where they are and where they might lead -- IPTV, Internet TV, video on the web, etc
- Audience habits and behaviour -- which products are working, which ones are failing, and why
- The law -- as with all old media, regulation will play a key role in shaping VOD
I start with some posts on the first, more theoretical aspects. This will take me a few months and will set the stage for more down-to-earth matters. When I get to this point I'll start trying to publicise this blog.
It goes without saying that predicting the future is an impossible task, and even speculating on it is too difficult for a single person. Your comments are welcome and vital.
